Steps to make Gravy is a four-track EP by Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly and was formerly released on 4 November 1996 on White Label Data in Australia. The subject track was compiled by Kelly and acquired him a ‘Music of the 12 months’ nomination at the 1998 Australasian Performing Protection under the law Relationship (APRA) Music Accolades. It tells the storyline of a recently imprisoned man writing a notice to his sibling, where the prisoner laments that he’ll be lacking the family’s Xmas celebrations. A similar character looks in Kelly’s early tunes, “To Her Door” (1987) and “Love Never Works promptly” (1994). The gravy menu is genuine – Kelly learned it from his first father-in-law. It had been covered by Wayne Reyne on the 2003 tribute record, Reports of Me: A Songwriter’s Tribute to Paul Kelly and on Reyne’s 2005 acoustic recording …And the Equine You Rode in On. It has additionally been included in David A long way, Luca Brasi, From Nowhere, Semicolon, Ghostwriters, Karl Broadie and Lawrence Agar. In Sept 2010, Kelly entitled his memoirs, Steps to make Gravy. On 29 Sept 2012 Kelly performed “Steps to make Gravy” and “Leaps and Bounds” at the 2012 AFL Grand Last.
